By-Polls for District, Tehsil Nazims today
TIMES.com.pk Punjab Bureau Report

The by-elections of Nazims and Naib Nazims of district and tehsil/town in Punjab and NWFP provinces are scheduled to be held on Monday -- today.

The by-polls will be held on the seats which were vacated due to candidate’s death or resignation. However, the schedule of by-election at Union Council levels has yet not been announced.

Foolproof Polling

The Election Commission of Pakistan has taken foolproof measures to ensure peaceful atmosphere on the election day. The polling would start at 8 am and continue till 4 pm without any break.

Elections Delayed

According to the provincial Election Commission officials, three Naib district nazims of Attock, Sargodha and Faisalabad have already been elected unopposed. The by-election of Tehsil Liaquatpur of Rahimyar Khan District has been delayed due to retirement of the only two contestants in the run.

The election in Tehsil Shorkot of Jhang District has also been delayed due to creation of the new tehsil of Ahmadpur Sial. The Commission is awaiting demarcation of the new tehsil carved out of Shorkot Tehsil.

Seats

In Punjab, the by-election is being held on six seats of Naib zila nazim, eight of Tehsil Nazims and seven of Naib tehsil nazims.

The six vacant seats of Naib zila nazim are Jhang, Gujrat, Hafizabad, Sialkot, Pakpatan and Layyah.

The Tehsil/town Nazims vacant seats are in Samundari, Kamoke, Gujrat, Ravi Town (Lahore), Pattoki, Multan Saddar, Taunsa and Rahimyar Khan. The Naib tehsil/town nazims elections are being held in Tandlianwala, Jhang, Ravi Town (Lahore), Jehanian, Taunsa, Bahawalpur and Rahimyar Khan.

Contest

The elections in Lahore, Rahimyar Khan and D G Khan have become interesting due to neck-and-neck contest amid allegations of use of police and state-machinery to pressurise the opponent candidates in favour of the ruling party-backed candidates in these districts.
