Jammu-Srinagar road closed as Mobile phones go dead in IHK
Kashmir Media Service

JAMMU: The 300-km Jammu-Srinagar highway has been closed since Monday due to landslides following snowfall and heavy rains in occupied Kashmir.

Landslides triggered at km 175 by overnight rains and snowfall disrupted vehicular traffic. 75 cm of snow had gathered on the 10 km-long stretch between km 210 and km 220. It was still raining and snowing at different places along the arterial road when reports last came in.

Mobile phones go dead in IHK

The people of occupied Kashmir woke up Tuesday to find their cherished mobile phones had gone dead, reportedly due to a break in a fibre-optic cable high up in the snow-bound Pir Panjal mountains. But even before this breakdown, the much-hyped service was already becoming a nightmare for subscribers in occupied Kashmir.

Subscribers said they faced numerous problems while using their prized cellular phones ever since the mobile service began on August 20 in selected cities in the Indian held territory including Jammu and Srinagar cities.

The subscriber is currently switched off, after response saying, the number you have dialled cannot be reached now and other pre-recorded messages like the network is currently busy, are all that is heard, complain some mobile phone users.

Referring to Tuesday's breakdown, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) deputy general manager (planning) Krishna said, there has been a break in the fibre-optic cable in the Pir Panjal mountains atop the tunnel. We tried to reach the fault area Monday, but couldn't because of heavy snowfall. We are now trying to transfer some mobile phone traffic to a satellite to ease the problem. Our team made it to the fault area early on Tuesday morning. Let us see how long it takes to rectify the snag.
