NEW DELHI (India):
Indefinite curfew was clamped in Tinsukia district in Upper
Assam and army was called on Wednesday after 18 people were
killed and 100 houses were burnt during a 24-hour violence
against Biharis.
Reports say, several huts and houses were torched, shops and
cash were looted in the violence, arson, and looting in
different towns of the state after tension escalated between
Assamese and non-Assamese.

Gogoi told an Indian TV channel that all possible measures
were being taken to control the situation. Sources said curfew
was clamped in the limits of Tinsukia Police Station from
1.00pm where eight persons hailing from Bihar, including six
members of a family, were killed late last night. The curfew
would remain in force till further orders.
Eight others were killed in
Dibrugarh, three in Tinsukia and four in Dhubri districts, the
police said. There were also reports of escalated violence
from Oil Township of Duliajan and Naharkatia, besides Namrup
and Chabua, the sources added.
