Gunman killed in fighting near army HQ in Srinagar

SRINAGAR (Indian Held Kashmir): Suspected gunmen hurled hand grenades and exchanged gunfire with soldiers on Wednesday, wounding at least 16 troops, after an overnight attack on the headquarters of a paramilitary unit in held Kashmir, a report said.

Indian soldiers were targeted by at least two gunmen holed up in a telephone exchange building near the Central Reserve Police Force paramilitary camp in Srinagar for most of Wednesday, said Col Mukhtiyar Singh, an Indian spokesman.

The telephone exchange later caught fire and the suspected militants apparently moved into a nearby house and resumed firing, Singh said.

One of the soldiers injured in that attack died early on Wednesday. Two of the freedom fighters too off from the camp, taking shelter in the telephone exchange.

The Indian army surrounded the building and cordoned off the area, anoher report said.

In occupied Kashmir, the Indian troops in their continued acts of state terrorism, martyred 3 more Kashmiris.

Two of these were shot dead at Surankot in Poonch district. One more Kashmiri was martyred in Thana Mandi area of Doda district in a clash in which a troop was killed and another injured.

Meanwhile, thousands of troops are engaged in siege and search operation in Srinagar since last evening when a military camp was attacked in Badami Bagh high security zone. Commanding Officer of the 32 Rashtriya Rifles and his Deputy were injured during the operation early this morning.

The military operation continued when reports last came in. As already reported, one Indian troop was killed and four injured in the attack.
