Gujranwala EPZ to help attract foreign investment
Pakistan Times Commerce Desk

SIALKOT: An Export processing Zone is being developed in Gujranwala with an estimated cost of Rs 99,44 million jointly by Punjab Small Industries Corporation (PSIC) and Export Processing Zones Authority. Official sources told APP here on Tuesday that Gujranwala Export Processing Zone EPZ is being developed on 111 acres of land on G.T road, 3 km from Gujranwala.

In Gujranwala, the main industries are ceramics, auto-gas kits, cutlery, melamine utensils, electrical products, washing machines, room air coolers, silk, velvet and other textile products, sanitary ware ,plastic products etc. The total export of Gujranwala is over Rs 330 million.

Facilities like road network, water supply, electricity, waste water collection and disposal of industrial waste, utility building etc are being provided to Gujranwala Export processing Zone.

The Punjab Small Industries Corporation (PSIC) will also provide developed plots for the establishment of banks, post offices, telephone exchange, mosque and dispensary in the GEP Zone.

It may be noted that despite rapid industrial growth in Gujranwala, a large number of small industrial units are still operating in thickly populated residential areas thus posing serious environmental and health problems for the people.

The Gujranwala Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) is making hectic efforts for developing “export culture” in Gujranwala to enhance export activities. In addition to this, GCCI has focussed on motivating the business community to shift their industrial units from the residential localities for the facility of the local residents.

The Gujranwala Export Processing Zone will also help in attracting the foreign investment which will ultimately pave way for transfer of industrial technology and enlarge the scope of employment in the area.
