ISLAMABAD: President
General Pervez Musharraf Tuesday highlighting the priorities
in the internal and external affairs of the country urged a
group of Pakistan's envoys to project policies on the regional
peace and security, combating extremism and terrorism,
economic development and strengthening the national
institutions.
He was talking to six
Pakistani envoys from selected countries, who called on him
along with Foreign Minister Khurshid Mahmud Kasuri, Foreign
Secretary Riaz Khokhar and Additional Secretary (United
Nations and Economic Coordination) Tariq Osman Hyder.
The six envoys had been
called to Islamabad for a year end review of Pakistan's
foreign policy. Pakistan's Ambassadors to China, the United
States, the United Kingdom and Austria as well as Pakistan's
Permanent Representatives to the United Nations in New York
and Geneva had held consultations, chaired by the Foreign
Minister and Foreign Secretary at the Foreign Office on
November 22 and 23.
The Foreign Minister and the
Foreign Secretary briefed the President General Pervez
Musharraf about the wide ranging discussions of the envoys on
Pakistan's bilateral relations with key countries and the
general direction of Pakistan's policies at the multilateral
forums.
They also informed the
President about the envoy's conclusions on making Pakistan's
foreign policy more responsive to the rapidly changes
international situation, in the years to come. The envoys who
called on the President included Riaz Mohammad Khan (China),
Ashraf Jehangir Qazi (USA), Dr. Maleeha Lodhi (UK), Ali Sarwar
Naqvi (Austria), Munir Akram (Permanent Representative to the
UN, New York) and Shaukat Umer (Permanent Representative to
the UN, Geneva).
Meeting with PM
Prime Minister Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali Tuesday asked the
Pakistani ambassadors abroad to project Pakistan's image as a
peace loving, progressive and forward looking country.
He was talking to Pakistan's
ambassadors to China, UK and USA who called on him at the
Prime Minister's House today. Foreign Secretary Riaz Khokhar
and senior officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs were
also present on the occasion.
The Prime Minister said that
country's efforts to combat terrorism and religious extremism
must be projected adequately to apprise the world community of
the seriousness of the Pakistan government in this regard.
The ambassadors exchanged
views with the Prime Minister on matters relating to the
country's foreign policy. They were in the capital in
connection with the process of consultation initiated by the
government. The regional and international situation also came
under discussion during the meeting. Matters relating to the
one year review of the country's foreign policy also figured
prominently during the meeting.
