GLOUCESTERSHIRE (United Kingdom):
Gloucestershire have
signed Pakistani all-rounder Shoaib Malik as one of their
overseas players for the 2004 season.
The 21-year-old had a brief spell with the Gladiators last
season and impressed coach Mark Alleyne enough to be offered a
deal for the whole of the next campaign.
Malik made 80 runs and took five wickets with his off-spinners
in his two county championship games in 2003 and was Man of
the Match in their C&G semi-final victory, when he top-scored
with 74.
He has also played five Tests and 53 one-day internationals
for Pakistan, making more than 1000 runs at an average of 30
and taking 42 wickets in ODIs.
Newly appointed coach Alleyne told the county's official
website: "Shoaib did very well for us last year in the short
time he was with us and fitted in very well. He is a gifted
all-rounder who is worthy of a place in either discipline and
as a 21 year old, he can only get better. He is an exciting,
quality player who has much to offer the team and I am really
pleased at having him in my squad."
Malik added: "I am really excited to have the opportunity to
return and play for Gloucestershire again as everybody was
very welcoming and professional. I look forward to helping
Gloucestershire win things and being part of the new set up
and thank them for giving me this chance."
