Pakistan Times Sports Desk

LAHORE: Pakistan took 2-0 lead in the five-match one-day series against New Zealand beating the touring side by 124 runs in the second one-day international at the Gaddafi Stadium on Monday.

Pakistan won the opening match on Saturday by 3 wickets. The third match will be played on December 3 at Faisalabad.

Pakistan stand in captain, Yousaf Youahan won the toss and elected to bat and hit up 281 for 6 in 50 overs, thanks to sparkling half centuries by top scorer Saleem Elahi, openers Imran Farhat and Yasir Hameed.Regular captain, Inzamam ul Haq was rested as he was suffering from throat infection.

Sami destroyed the tail with career best figures five for just runs 10 runs in 7.5 overs, before missing two successive hat tricks and having four wickets off just 4 balls in one over.

“Man of the match” proved a nightmare with a rare display of accurate pace bowling as New Zealand five wickets fell at a grand same total of 155 before they were 119 for 4 in 27.5 overs. The six wickets fell with addition of 3 runs.

Sami mopped up the tail, starting the action removing middle order batsman Jacob Oram (14) before top scorer Richard Jones (63) played a fighting innings with stroke play, producing 68 runs for the 4th wicket with skipper Chris Cairns (29) who was run out.

Jones hit one six and five fours off 110 balls in 141 minutes and was bowled by spinner Shoaib Malik who took one wicket for 36 runs.

The departure of Jones and coming of Sami brought Pakistan into the match and the bowler went on for a wonderful performance in his 7th over and innings 37th.He bowled Oram off the first ball, bowled Tama Canning (0) off the second and Deniel Vettori (0) denied him the hat trick by playing the coming two deliveries and was bowled off the fifth and Paul Hitchock was also bowled off the last delivery which gave Sami four wickets in space of four balls.

Sami who bowled the next over waited till the fifth delivery and bowled Brendon McCullum (0) to steer the side to success and surpassed his previous best performance of 4 for 25 against West Indies at Sharjah in 2002.

Earlier Pakistan took a flying start which eventually helped them to build a respectable total. The openers’ pair of Yasir Hameed and Imran Farhat gave the side much needed start by putting on 115 runs off 144 balls as Black Caps bowlers struggled for early break through.

Kiwis most successful bowler, leg spinner, Daniel Vettori with a three wickets haul for 44 runs , dislodged the pair when Yasir (53) mis-timed a clever delivery and was caught at short fine leg by Cumming.Yasir hit five fours off 74 balls and at a total of 144.

Pakistan lost their second wicket in 30 overs before the first wicket fell in 20th over.

Vettori got the second break through when Imran (68) attempted an unsuccessful big shot and was taken at long off by Hitchcock and Pakistan fell into further trouble losing their third wicket at 162 in 35.2 overs. With Youhana ( 11) as third victim, Vittori did the maximum damage in 10 overs. Imran, well set for a big knock, forced one six and eight fours in sizzling knock consuming 88 balls in 123 minutes.

As Pakistan continued to lose quick wickets of their middle order, a fifth wicket stand of exact 50 runs between the top scorer Saleem and Shoaib Malik minimized their worries to some extent before their fourth wicket fell at 171 in 38.3 overs. Misbah ul Haq (4) was the batsman out off medium pacer Tuffy.

Saleem (70) batted with responsibility and struck six fours off the ropes in 69 balls off 106 minutes and the stand was broken with the departure of Shoaib runout (23) with two fours. Pakistan fifth wicket was downed in 45 overs at a total of 221 runs.

Saleem continued supporting the side and associated Abdul Razzaq notout (42) for a small but useful contribution of 45 runs for the 6th wicket. Saleem lost concentration off a rising delivery of paceman Hitchcock and was caught at extra covers by Vettori at a grand total of 266 in 49.4 overs. Razzaq slammed two mighty sixes and three fours in 16 balls to shine in the role of an all rounder.

Result: Pakistan won by 124 runs and lead the series by 2-0
