Tributes to 'Melody Queen' as Pakistan observes her 3rd Anniversary

ISLAMABAD: The third death anniversary of Malika-e-Tarannum Noor Jehan was observed throughout the county with great respect n' reverence.

The Malika-e-Tarannum or Melody Queen, started her career as an actress and singer and played leading roles in a number of famous films. She lit up cinema screens in her youth and dominated the world of music with her sweet voice for over half a century.

Noor Jehan was blessed with a unique blend of melodious voice and a lasting passion for music. She has been described as one the most impressive cultural ambassadors of Pakistan. She was a true Pakistani and sung numerous memorable patriotic songs during the 1965 Indo-Pak war which lifted the spirits of the Pakistani arms forces.

In 1960s and 70s, she took Punjabi music to new heights. Her voice made Punjabi language very popular and attractive overseas. She gave new meanings and approach to Punjabi songs.

Born as Allah Wasai, on September 21, 1926 into a modest musician family, Noor Jehan had started her musical career in Calcutta at the age of nine as a singing child star.
