WAPDA becomes Pakistan's new Volley Ball National Champion

ISLAMABAD: WAPDA overpowered defending champions Pakistan Army in straight games to take the title in the 39th PM National Volleyball Championship at Liaquat Gymnasium, Pakistan Sports Complex, on Thursday.

WAPDA proved a superior side in their emphatic 25-20, 25-20 and 25-15 victory in the final before a sizeable crowd. The chief guest on the occasion gave away the winner's trophy to WAPDA who grabbed the title for the fifth time.

The third-place play-off provided better entertainment to the crowd as POF, Wah downed the record 15-times holders Police in full five games 25-20, 25-27, 28-30, 25-23, 15-13 with Sajjad Ahmed, Sadi Ahmed, Zaheer, Liaquat Ali and Yasir giving a good account of themselves for the winners and Tufail, Kashif, Ehsan and Tariq performing well for Police.

Bakht Risal, Muhammad Elahi, Zafar Iqbal, Muhammad Sakhi, Naeemullah and Younis Iqbal were expected to prove the driving force in the final for Pakistan Army who were seeking their 11th national title.

As it happened, they were out spiked and outsmarted by WAPDA's Irfan Nawaz, Shahid Hussain, Abdul Rahim, Jabbar Ahmed, Munibullah, Sajid Ali, Liaquat Yar, Sajjad Ahmed, Shaukatullah, Zahid Pervez, Asghar Ali and others.

Individual awards, including the most-valuable-player-of-the-championship prize of Rs 25,000 was given to WAPDA's captain Irfan Nawaz. Other individual awards, worth Rs 15,000 each, went to Munibullah (best attacker), Muhammad Sakhi (best server), Liaquat Yar (best libero) and Muhammad Elahi (best setter).

A special award of Rs. 15,000 was also given to WAPDA's Shahid for his splendid performance in the final.
