Right to Self Determination Day observed in Jammu & Kashmir
Pakistan Times Kashmir Desk

SRINAGAR (Indian Held-Kashmir): Kashmiris on both sides of the Line of Control today observed the right of self determination day to attract the world attention to the urgency of speedy implementation of UN resolutions on Kashmir.

According to details, it was on this day in 1949, that a resolution was adopted at the meeting of the UN Commission for Pakistan and India mandating a free and fair plebiscite to determine Kashmiris political destiny. A public gathering was held at Mazar-e-Shuhada in Srinagar to mark the day. APHC leaders on this occasion renewed the pledge to continue their struggle unitedly till Kashmiris' right to self-determination is achieved.

Addressing the gathering APHC Chairman, Syed Ali Gilani said the UN resolutions were as relevant today as were 54 years ago and these resolutions will remain valid until Kashmiris are given their birth right to decide their future themselves. APHC's struggle is peaceful and it would welcome any move of resolving Kashmir dispute through dialogue. The APHC Chairman pointed out that India had no justification to continue its illegal occupation of Kashmiris' soil and the people of Kashmir will not rest content until this occupation is vacated. The gathering was also addressed by other APHC leaders, including Muhammad Saleem Zargar who was released after 14 years of illegal detention a few days ago.

In Muzaffarabad, a procession was taken out which was led by the Convenor APHC AJK chapter, Muhammad Farooq Rehmani. Addressing a gathering on the occasion the speakers urged upon the Untied Nations to play a significant role in resolving the Kashmir issue in accordance with the wishes of the Kashmiri people and its own resolutions. Later a memorandum addressed to the UN Secretary General Kofi Annan was presented at the UN Military Observers Group Office.

Presiding over a party meeting in Jammu, Democratic Freedom Party Chief, Shabbir Ahmad Shah appealed to the Indian leaders to seize the golden opportunity of 12th SAARC Summit for holding talks with Pakistani officials to pave the way to resolve the Kashmir issue.
