SRINAGAR
(Indian Held-Kashmir): Kashmiris on both sides of the Line of
Control today observed the right of self determination day to
attract the world attention to the urgency of speedy
implementation of UN resolutions on Kashmir.
According to details, it was on this day in 1949, that a
resolution was adopted at the meeting of the UN Commission for
Pakistan and India mandating a free and fair plebiscite to
determine Kashmiris political destiny. A public gathering was
held at Mazar-e-Shuhada in Srinagar to mark the day. APHC
leaders on this occasion renewed the pledge to continue their
struggle unitedly till Kashmiris' right to self-determination
is achieved.
Addressing the gathering APHC Chairman, Syed Ali Gilani said
the UN resolutions were as relevant today as were 54 years ago
and these resolutions will remain valid until Kashmiris are
given their birth right to decide their future themselves.
APHC's struggle is peaceful and it would welcome any move of
resolving Kashmir dispute through dialogue. The APHC Chairman
pointed out that India had no justification to continue its
illegal occupation of Kashmiris' soil and the people of
Kashmir will not rest content until this occupation is
vacated. The gathering was also addressed by other APHC
leaders, including Muhammad Saleem Zargar who was released
after 14 years of illegal detention a few days ago.
In Muzaffarabad, a procession was taken out which was led by
the Convenor APHC AJK chapter, Muhammad Farooq Rehmani.
Addressing a gathering on the occasion the speakers urged upon
the Untied Nations to play a significant role in resolving the
Kashmir issue in accordance with the wishes of the Kashmiri
people and its own resolutions. Later a memorandum addressed
to the UN Secretary General Kofi Annan was presented at the UN
Military Observers Group Office.
Presiding over a party meeting in Jammu, Democratic Freedom
Party Chief, Shabbir Ahmad Shah appealed to the Indian leaders
to seize the golden opportunity of 12th SAARC Summit for
holding talks with Pakistani officials to pave the way to
resolve the Kashmir issue.
