PESHAWAR: Religious
political parties in Pakistan have begun to demonstrate their
opposition to the week-long military operation against 500
extremists in a tribal area near the Afghan border.
'Tribal Rebellion'
'There is a possibility of a tribal rebellion if the
government continues with such operations in the tribal
zones,' said Bazar Gul, president of the Khyber Union, a
tribal organisation in the Khyber district, between Peshawar.
Hundreds of demonstrators blocked a main road southwest of
Peshawar this week shouting 'Stop the Wana operation', 'Down
with America', and 'The Americans are the world's worst
terrorists', before symbolically burning an effigy of US
President George W. Bush.
Threats to Islamabad
'Stop the Wana operation immediately, or Islamabad will not be
able to hide from its flames,' the leader of the
Jamaat-e-Islami (JI), Abdul Wadood Afridi, said during the
protest.
'The operation was launched on the order of the Americans and
we demand that all American favourites leave Pakistan,' he
added.
