UNICEF appreciates Pakistan on health and education
Pakistan Times Health Desk

ISLAMABAD: UNICEF Executive Director Carol Bellamy appreciated Pakistan for improving girls enrolment in schools, fight against polio and infant mortality.

Addressing a Press Conference at the UNICEF office in Islamabad she expressed her concern that 60 percent of child deaths in Pakistan could be prevented if childhood diseases such as diarrhoea and neo-natal infections are controlled.

Carol Bellamy said Pakistan is yet to be declared a polio free country adding that role of religious scholars in the Polio eradication campaign is laudable.

The HIV/AIDS

To a question about the HIV/AIDS, she said its prevalence rate is very low but still Pakistan is a high risk country which needs mass level awareness.

Carol Bellamy said she was impressed by the work of the National Commission for Human Development which mobilized thousands of volunteers to enrol children in schools and educated mothers on life-saving techniques such as the preparation of ORS.●
