Monitoring Report

WASHINGTON (US): In a far-reaching legislation, the US Congress has asked President George W. Bush to provide all possible assistance to Pakistan to resolve any outstanding difficulties with its neighbours particularly India, news agency INP reports.

The “9/11 (Commission) Recommendations Implementation Act, section 4082,” stated that the US should provide assistance to encourage and enable Pakistan to seek to resolve any outstanding difficulties with its neighbours and other countries in its region.”

The legislation introduced in both House of Representatives and Senate said that the US should, over a long-term period, “help to ensure a promising, stable, and secure future for Pakistan, and should in particular provide assistance to encourage and enable Pakistan to continue and improve upon its commitment to combating extremists.”

It also said US should ensure “Pakistan continues to make efforts to fully control its territory and borders; progresses towards becoming a more effective and participatory democracy and participates more vigorously in the global marketplace and to continue to modernize its economy.”

The legislation called for ensuring that Pakistan took all necessary steps to halt the spread of weapons of mass destruction.●
