Atkinson crowned women's World
Open squash champ KUALA LUMPUR (Malaysia): Vanessa Atkinson of Holland won the World Open women's squash championships Saturday by trouncing Natalie Grinham of Australia 3-0 in the final Saturday. Atkinson took just 31 minutes to win the title at the National Squash Complex in Kuala Lumpur as Grinham could not find an answer to the pace of the English-born Dutch player who won 9-1, 9-1, 9-5. It was heartbreak for Grinham who was looking to avenge Atkinson's defeat of her elder sister, Rachael Grinham, in the semi finals on Friday. "I must say that the win was easier then expected as I was expecting Natalie to put up a better fight," said Atkinson. "I have never won in Kuala Lumpur when tournaments were played at the old courts at Jalan Duta but this year alone I have won thrice," added the champion, who previously won the Kuala Lumpur Open and the Malaysian Open at the same venue. Atkinson, who pocketed prize money of 8,075 dollars, is ranked three in the world and becomes the first Dutch player to win the world title, her ninth tournament victory this year.● |
