Pakistan cricket coach Woolmer rejects Miandad’s criticism

SYDNEY (Australia): Pakistan cricket coach Bob Woolmer has described criticism from his predecessor as Pakistan coach as “very disappointing”.

Javed Miandad was quoted as saying that Woolmer did not understand Pakistan’s cricket culture and had failed to bring about an improvement in results. Miandad accused the team of being “inconsistent and erratic”. But Woolmer replied: “He’s not working with me, he’s not in the dressing room, he doesn’t understand what I’m doing or what I’m trying to do.”

Miandad’s comments followed a 10-wicket defeat by Western Australia in Perth in the team’s final warm-up game before the first Test.

“It does hurt to see a talented bunch of players struggle like this.

“The problem lies in the fact that Woolmer doesn’t have any idea of our cricket culture and background.

“Read his statements and you know this is a man not confident and sure about what he is doing,” he said. “People want results in cricket, that’s what matters. There is no need for experimentation with our team because it is a world-class team, although inexperienced.”

Woolmer took over from Miandad in June, having previously been in charge of the South African national team. At the time, he said he would welcome Miandad’s input to help the team progress.

But Miandad responded by accusing the Pakistan Criket Board of being “unethical” by terminating his third spell in charge.●
