Gas Heaters may cause Death!

LAHORE: The doctors on Sunday warned the people to switch off the gas room heaters before going to bed otherwise it may cause death.

Commenting on recent gas related deaths in different parts of the city, Medical Superintendent Jinnah Hospital Dr Zahid Pervaiz advised the public to observe safety measures while using gas room heaters to avoid any fatal mishap.

He said gas poisoning is a very complicated case and not simple enough to treat. He said that before going to bed people should ensure that room heaters are properly switched off.

Chemical Composition

He said that chemical composition of natural gas is a mixture of two gases which consists of certain elements including 94.42 per cent gas and gas from potohar oil field contains 12 elements including 77.11 methane.

Dr. Zahid said that majority of the people, use gas-heaters in almost air tight rooms in winter season, which results in gas poisoning and may lead to death due to absence of adequate fresh oxygen intake that causes acute breathing problems.

He said that normally a window or a ventilator must be kept open for adequate intake of oxygen.

Gas after burning produces carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide gases of which carbon monoxide gas is hazardous to life.

Carbon monoxide destroys the red blood carpsles that absorb the oxygen. It also badly affects the entire body including brain, liver, kidney, muscles and damages the living cells.●
