57 Killed in Karnataka road mishap in India

BIJAPUR (India): Fifty-seven people, including 18 women and two children, were killed when a bus fell into the Almatti dam canal at Nidugundi in Karnataka's Bijapur district early on Monday.

The bodies of all the victims of the ill-fated bus, bound for Chitapur district in Gulbarga district from Hubli, have been recovered, district and police authorities said.

Nine passengers of the jam-packed bus swam to safety.

Among the victims were 18 women and two children, they said adding that seven members of a family bound for Jewargi in Gulbarga district also died in the accident.

An earlier report said that at least 40 passengers were feared dead in southern India on Monday after a bus fell into a canal.

They said the accident occurred around 3:00 a.m. (2130 GMT) in Bijapur district of Karnataka state, about 530 km (330 miles) northwest of state capital Bangalore.

Rescue teams had reached the site, a police officer in Bangalore told foreign news agency.●
