ISLAMABAD: The National
Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) is expected to allow here today,
Monday an increase of 10-12 per cent in power tariffs of ex-Wapda companies
that may be adjusted in previously unimplemented relief to the electricity
consumers.
“This 10-12 per cent increase will be adjusted in the unimplemented relief
that was extended by the NEPRA in October last year under corporatization of
the Wapda,” an official source explained as how the authorities are all set
to digest earlier announced relief in electricity charges.
The NEPRA, in its separate determination, had recommended a relief for all
the eight distribution companies of the Wapda but the decision is yet to be
implemented by the government.
“With this increase, the power consumers will be deprived of availing relief
for four months.”
“The relief earlier extended by the NERPA in power rates will be adjusted
and there may be slight increase in existing power tariffs of different
distribution companies of the Wapda,” the sources said
The Wapda had moved a petition on behalf of its companies to increase the
power tariffs following increase in the furnace oil prices in international
market.
“The people will be deprived of Rs 5 billion relief after increasing the
power tariffs without passing on the relief extended in October last year,”
the sources explained.●
