Snowfall lashes Pakistan's Northern Areas, air link disrupted

ISLAMABAD: Heavy snowfall and rainfall continued in Northern Areas as Met Office forecast more snow and rains for the next four days.

Northern Areas' air link with other areas of the country are still disrupted, a private news channel reported.

More rains and snowfall in Punjab, Kashmir and NWFP are expected, weather forecasts said, adding, snowfall and rains continued for the second day in Northern Areas and Kashmir.

Scattered downpour was also reported in upper Punjab including Islamabad and upper parts of the Frontier province.

Kalam, Malam Jabba, Naran, Kaghan and Chitral have received four foot and Murree and Galyat received three and half-foot snow in current spell.

More Rains


For next four to five days more rains have been forcast in Rawalpindi, Islamabad, Lahore, Peshawar and other parts of Punjab and NWFP provinces, a Met office spokesman said.

"While Baluchistan and Sindh provinces will come under another wet spell in the next 48 hours and Islamabad, Punjab, NWFP, and Kashmir will remain in the grip of a wet spell and snowfall during the next five days," he said on Sunday.

Level of Snowfall

Kashmir, Northern Areas, Murree and Galiyat received more rain ad snowfall on Sunday and at least 4 feet and 3.5 feet of snow was recorded at Galiyat and Murree respectively in the last three days.

The source said that present cold wave is likely to last over the next few days and the people are advised to avoid journeys in the mountainous area.

On Sunday, Garhi Dopatta received 83 mm of rain, Balakot 61 mm, Muzaffarabad 50 mm, Saidu Sharif 45 mm, Peshawar 40 mm, Islamabad 31 mm, Parachinar 30 mm, Rawalpindi 28 mm, Kohat and Abottabad 25 mm, Risalpur and Bahawal Nagar 10 mm, Attock and Mangla 15 mm, Faisalabad, Sialkot, Quetta, Sargodha 6 mm each and Multan 5 mm.

The minimum temperature on Sunday was -13 C at Kalam.

The minimum temperature in other major cities on Sunday was : Islamabad 7 C, Lahore 11 C, Karachi 18 C, Peshawar 8 C, Quetta 4 C, Gilgit 0 C, Muzaffarabad 5 C, Multan 10 C, Faisalabad 10 C and Murree -6 C.●
