Vehicle identification system to be launched in Islamabad, Pindi
Pakistan Times National News Desk

ISLAMABAD: The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) will start Vehicle Identification and Tracking System (VITS) soon in Islamabad and Rawalpindi, said the Director General (Projects) NADRA, Brig (retd) Zubair Ahmad on Wednesday.

In an interview, he said that it is a modern and high-tech system which will be used to stop the misuse and theft of cars through a tracker chip fixed on each vehicle's screen called Vehicle Identification Numbers (VIN).

He said that NADRA will issue Vehicle Identification and Tracking Number on a secure document to the applicant. Vehicle information, including ownership history, tax payments and endorsement will be available to law and order enforcing agencies through online access, he said.

Zubair Ahmad said that initially trans-receivers and antennas would be fixed at about 10 existing points of the city to read the details of every car/vehicle, adding, later it will be placed at every police checkpoint, all major bridges and entry points of the city.

He said that it would be mandatory for every vehicle to get VITS. The vehicles not allotted VITS would be automatically identified, photographed and checked while others would also be read and monitored, he added.

Replying to a question, he said that NADRA has issued more than 42 million Computerized National Identity Cards (CNICs) across the country. He said that 215 NADRA centers are issuing 25,000 to 30,000 cards on daily bases. NADRA has also started mobile van service to issue CNICs to the masses living in rural areas in coordination with local administration, he added.

Zubair Ahmad said that NADRA has introduced Machine Readable Passport (MRP) which is first of its kind in the world in terms of the features and components. The MRP system prepared by NADRA, is packed with the latest technologies in Facial Recognition and Fingerprint Identification, he said. This is the forerunner of all the modern passports, he added. He said, at present, MRP is being issued from all provincial headquarters and capital.

Zubair Ahmad said, Chairman NADRA recently participated in annual meeting of International Civil Aviation Authority (ICAA) and introduced MRP adding, all participating countries lauded the Pakistan's MRP system.●
