Sri Lankans seek jobs in Pakistan to rebuild their shattered homes

KARACHI: Despite all the hardships brought to the Sri Lankans in wake of Tsunami, they have neither given up their hope nor the dignity.

W. Fatima Sri, an inhabitant of Goviyapa Village, Gall - Sri Lanka, happens to be among the very lot who lost her mother against the exigency two months only.

But despite being depressed and dejected she is ready to come to Pakistan and work as domestic help - so as to collect money and rebuild her home.

Fatima, a young and unmarried girl had worked in Kuwait for five years as house maid bringing things from there which were also washed away with all her loved ones and belongings.

Mahnaz Rahman, a humanist as well as an activist associated with Pakistan office of Church World Service who had only recently been at Sri Lanka as part of the CWS Emergency Relief team mentioned that visit to southern parts of Tsunami hit country reflected of the gruesome annihilation.

"Yet, people were keen to regain their strength and help themselves in commencing an new life," she observed reminding that besides support from different countries and international organization the Sri Lankan government has announced to allocate a permanent block of land for every affected family.

CWS, she said was working with its partners from the development community to expedite the process of rehabilitation. The partners include Foundation for Co existence, Stromme Foundation, Sarvodaya, NCC-SL, Interfaith Fellowship for Peace and Development. Till date the CWS and its partners were said to had distributed 2000 shelter besides medicine boxes and health kits.

CWS also plans to organize a training on Emergency Filed Coordination under supervision of a US trainer.  CWS is also helping some families for the reconstruction of their houses on the plots being allotted by the government in Sri Lanka.●
