Lahore Zoo gifts Tiger ‘Tipu’ to Karachi Zoo

KARACHI: The Bengal Tiger, gifted by Lahore Zoo for Karachi Zoo has been named as “Tipu.”

This was announced by first Director of Karachi Zoo A.A. Kureshi after a competition for selection of name held among city’s boys and girl children.

Dr Kureshi said that 268 names were received by post besides telephone calls from over 1000 children.

However, names suggested over telephone were not included in the competition.

Some of the names as suggested by children were Tsunami, Shehzore, Doolha, Raja, Buhadar, Badshah, Raju, Bangloo, Saba, Sonu, Banglachi (Bengal-Lahore-Karachi).

Dr Kureshy said the name Tipu was suggested by 19 boys and girls and selected by the committee.

The City Government has announced a prize of Rs5000 for the name selected by the committee.

It will go to the fortunate child emerging successful among 19 children as a result of ballotting.

The name of the child will also be inscribed on the cage where the Tiger will be kept.

The committee members included Nazim’s Coordinator Dr Fayaz Alam, DDO Dr Kazim Hussian and Zoologist Abida Rais.●
