MMA’s decision!
-
Imtiaz Ahmed, Karachi
I WAS shocked to
learn the MMA’s decision to segregate girl students in Khyer Medical
College, Peshawar.
Due to this, these students and their parents are in a great fix, especially
concerning the location of the separate campus that is three kilometres away
from their hostel.
No medical amenities exist near the new campus while commuting between the
campus and hostel will be cumbersome for the students.
If the MMA government segregates girls in colleges today - tomorrow they can
completely ban education for women.
Hence we should strongly condemn this act. And if the MMA government really
believes in gender differences, then it should build a new building for the
male students and displace them, instead of the females.
This move to segregate female medical students from the males will result in
a complete fiasco, as neither NWFP nor the other provinces have separate
hospitals for women. Which means the female medical students will eventually
have to work alongside male doctors in hospitals, causing this segregation
futile.
The decision to segregate male and female students portrays that this
government does not believe in the equality of the genders.
They still hold the archaic belief that women are a different species that
can’t survive without man.
And if they do venture to do so, they will face hazards. If the government
is really worried about the maladjustment of boys and girls in colleges,
then rather than wasting time and energy on such trivial matters, it should
address problems at the grassroots’ level - i.e. primary education,
providing a conducive and sound educational environment for all students.
Once this is achieved, co-education will not be an issue. The MMA government
has involved itself in unnecessary problems such as banning advertisement
boards, cable television (ludicrously, only in the month of Ramadan) and now
the segregation of girl students in Khyber Medical College.
May I ask the MMA government why it turns a blind eye to the more important
issues like poverty, unemployment, inflation, illiteracy and corruption?●
