Local government elections in Pakistan to
be held in two phases

ISLAMABAD: Chief Election
Commissioner of Pakistan Justice Abdul Hameed Dogar said Wednesday that
elections to the local government institutions would be held in two phases
starting from first week of July next.
He was talking to the Ambassador of United States of America Ryan C. Crocker
who called on him here at his office.
The CEC briefed the Ambassador about the arrangements made so far by the
Election Commission (EC) for holding the forthcoming Local Government
elections in the country. He was informed that the Local Government
elections shall be held in two phases starting from first week of July,
2005.
The CEC informed the Ambassador that Election Commission has always been
taking measures to strengthen democratic process in Pakistan.
Electoral Rolls
He said as part of the preparations for LG polls, the electoral rolls have
already been updated and remaining formalities will be completed according
to the laid down schedule.
The Ambassador appreciated the EC role in implementing the road map to
democracy. Kanwar Muhammad Dilshad, Secretary, Election Commission was
present during the meeting.
Later the Secretary told newsmen that elections to various categories of
Union Councils will be completed in July-August, 2005. The process of Local
Government Elections will be completed during August, he said.
Dilshad said that as per instructions of the CEC, all necessary arrangements
for holding forthcoming Local Government Elections are being completed.
Revised updated electoral rolls have already been published. Appointment of
District Returning Officers, Returning Officers and Assistant Returning
Officers is under process.
Necessary directions have been issued to all Provincial Election
commissioners to gear up their machinery for holding Local Government
Elections in a fair and transparent manner, the Secretary concluded.
The Ambassador appreciated the role of Election Commission in implementing
the road map to democracy.●
