Inflation affecting Health
-
Sabeen Raza, Karachi

THE increasing level of inflation has affected the country’s inhabitants and their well-being. Despite what the micro indicators reveal, the situation is so bad that people have even stopped purchasing necessary food items.

People now spend money only on the bare essentials, cutting down even on food items. This is affecting the health of the consumers as well as the market. The prices of milk, chicken, meat, vegetables are so high that many people find it difficult to fulfil their needs.

Nothing is left of their income after they have paid for their utilities, which sees most people saving by buying less or low-quality foodstuff as maybe required by them. For this reason many are developing deficiencies and ailments like as liver ailments, kidney infections and iron, vitamin and protein deficiencies.

Diseases which one usually classifies as “adult diseases,” especially like diabetes are also affecting children. Serious efforts should be undertaken to minimise the costs of essential products making them affordable to the common man. Such subsidised food items will take some of the burden on the consumer’s shoulders, and make their lives more bearable.●
