Third Rail Crash in Three Days in Japan

TOKYO (Japan): Japan has been rocked by a third train crash in three days. A van has hit a moving passenger train just outside Tokyo, seriously injuring the 70-year-old driver.

The vehicle had edged on to the tracks at a rail crossing in Yokohama and hit the train as it was passing.

The van's driver was seriously injured and was taken to a nearby hospital.

None of the 130 passengers on the eight-car train were injured.

An official said the rail crossing's bars were already down at the time of the collision and the cause of the accident was under investigation.

The incident comes just two days after a train in western Japan derailed and slammed into an apartment building, killing at least 91 people and injuring over 450.

The crash near the western city of Osaka was Japan's worst train wreck in four decades.

On Tuesday, another passenger train crashed off the tracks in Tokyo.

The express train, the Super Hitachi-23, hit a truck on the track in the Ibaraki area. No one was injured.●
