Six factories of pirated software, CDs, DVDs raided in Pakistan

KARACHI: The Federal Investigation Agency (An unidentified officer of Pakistan's Federal Investigation Agency arranges confiscated pirated compact discs for media in Karachi, Pakistan, Tuesday, May 3, 2005. FIA confiscated about one hundred thousand CDs in raids. Pakistan, China, India, Indonesia, and the Philippines lead a blacklist of Asian copyright violators released by the United States, which sought tough action to combat piracy and counterfeiting of U.S. goods.FIA) here Tuesday raided six locations, recovered pirated software, movies and DVDs and made several arrests.

The raids were conducted to enforce violation of Copyright Ordinance and to bring the perpetrators, involved in the illicit business of manufacture and sale of VCDs, audio CDs, software and DVDs to book.

Four FIA teams, headed by a Deputy Director conducted raids on six factories, which were also sealed.

The teams recovered 50,000 VCDs, 23,000 audio cassettes, thousands of audio CDs, 6,000 master copies and their titles, besides 12,000 magnetic reels etc.

One of the owners Farooque Chappra was arrested, while several others, serving as production and printing staff were also arrested.●
