China supports Musharraf's statement on
UN's reforms BEIJING (China): China supports the statement made by President Gen. Pervez Musharraf in UN Security Council summit in New York yesterday that the world body should be made more effective to look after the interests of the developing countries, said a spokesman of the Chinese Foreign Ministry Qin Gang here Thursday. Commenting on the statement of President Musharraf at a weekly news briefing, the spokesman said, judging from the speech of President Musharraf, it is correct to expect from the United Nations to play a more effective role promoting world peace, maintaining integrity and enhancing its capacity to meet the challenges, being faced by the international community, including the threats of terrorism. Pakistan and China have many similar opinions and suggestions on the UN reforms. In this connection, he referred to the statement made by President Hu Jintao in the Security Council on the issue of UN reforms, that also sought making the world body more representative and effective in dealing with various regional and international issues. China, the spokesman further said is engaged in strengthening its cooperation with Pakistan and other countries on the question of UN reforms. To another question asked by a foreign correspondent about the alleged supply of some nuclear assistance to DPRK by Dr. Qadeer Khan, the spokesman said he did not know about it and they have no any such information. On the issue of counter-terrorism and nuclear non-proliferation, he said the Chinese government has consistent and clear-cut position on them. China stands firmly against terrorism and nuclear proliferation. China believes that the relevant laws, rules, practices should be strictly implemented to ensure peace and stability world over, he added. The spokesman pointed out China has signed many international conventions on nuclear non-proliferation and this was an indication of its commitment to join the international efforts on non-proliferation and combating terrorism. It also reflects China's readiness to step up its cooperation with the other countries to deal with such serious issues, he added.● |
