100 lady health workers missing by Quake devastation in NW Pakistan

PESHAWAR: After devastative earthquake, the health authorities could not contact 100-lady health workers posted in NWFP’s quake-stricken areas.

Prior to the October 8 quake 170 lady health workers were working in the quake-hit districts of the province including Mansehra, Buttgram, Balakot, Abbotabad and Shangla, deputy provincial coordinator Lady Health Workers Program Dr. Nasir Idris said.

After the quake only 70 of them could be contacted, while 100 still untraced. He called the missing health workers to contact on phone numbers: 091-9213546 and 091-9213547.

125 bodies recovered from Girls College


Meanwhile, Pakistan Army spokesman Maj. General Shaukat Sultan has said that 125 dead bodies were retrieved from Shaheen girls college in Balakot on Saturday.

“We are trying to reach the areas still un-accessed”, Shaukat Sultan said. Work has been started to remove debris from the devastated areas, he further  said. The army engineers have built a bridge over a Nallah after collapse of  bridge over Jhelum near Hattian, he said. The work is in progress to reopen Muzaffarabad-Chakothi road, as over half portion of the road has been cleared.

The work to restore Kaghan-Balakot road was also underway on both sides and the road was cleared upto 16 kilometers at Balakot side and 27 kilometers on Kaghan side.

Meanwhile restoration work was also under progress at Neelum valley road. The road has been badly damaged in the earthquake and will need new construction at some places, which will take time, Sultan said.

Turkey has established a cook-house at Jalalabad Park in Muzaffarabad to provide fresh food to people, the ISPR chief said by adding; the relief goods have arrived in abundance and being distributed among the people. Army jawans traveling by foot with relief goods on their shoulders to reach the areas, yet unaccessed, he added.●
