Pakistan Pays Compensation to Sri Lankan Soldiers

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has paid a compensation of Rs 1.3 million for Sri Lankan soldiers who were killed and injured while protecting Pakistan’s High Commissioner, in an attack last year.

According to a message from Pakistan’s High Commission in Colombo Pakistan paid an amount of Rs 250,000 for each of the four soldiers who were killed and Rs 100,000 for three who sustained severe injuries.

The soldiers were killed in claymore mine attack on the life of the former High Commissioner on August 14, 2006.

President of Sri Lanka Mahinda Rajapakes gave away the cheques to the next of kins and those injured.

The new High Commissioner of Pakistan Shahzad A. Chaudhry said the brave Sri Lankan soldiers did not hesitate to offer the supreme sacrifice of their lives in line of their duty.

He said the cheques were a modest recognition and gratitude of the Pakistan Government for the outstanding commitment and sacrifice rendered by these brave soldiers.
