Zardari for proactive approach in disaster mitigation
'Pakistan Times' Federal Bureau

ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari on Thursday said that only proactive approach can help in reducing the impacts of natural and man made disasters.

In a meeting with the Chairman National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), the President emphasised that prevention and mitigation should be the frontline of policy in disaster management followed by relief and rescue.

Chairman NDMA Lt Gen (Rtd) Farooq Ahmad apprised the President about the different aspects of newly established disaster management system in Pakistan.

The President desired to have a detailed briefing on the law, role and scope of disaster management authority.

He stressed that disaster management system should be able to cope with any kind of disastrous situation and for this purpose government should use all resources at its disposal.

This meeting signifies the importance political leadership attaches to institution building for disaster management.

The President appreciated the role of NDMA in managing the recent natural disasters in different parts of the country.
