'Pakistan Times' Kashmir Desk

SRINAGAR (IHK): In occupied Kashmir, the Chairman of All Parties Hurriyet Conference Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has expressed confidence that the US President-elect, Barack Obama’s determination to settle the Kashmir dispute will bring about a lasting peace in South Asian region.

The APHC Chairman in his letter addressed to Barack Obama, released in Srinagar today, congratulated him on his historic success in the presidential elections of the United States.

Welcoming the recent statements of the president-elect, in support of resolving the dispute, Mirwaiz applauded Obama’s initiative of considering to appoint former US President Bill Clinton as special envoy to settle the conflict over Kashmir.

Such initiative, he added, will help in bringing peace to the millions of people in Kashmir who have been suffering at the hands of Indian troops.

Referring to Security Council’s resolutions on Kashmir, the APHC Chairman maintained that Kashmiris awaited the fulfilment of the promise that was made to them by the world community.

He underlined the need to ascertain the aspirations of Kashmiri people in order to reach a final settlement on Kashmir inline with the basic human right of self-determination.

Mirwaiz pointed out that the All Parties Hurriyet Conference had been advocating a peaceful resolution of the Kashmir dispute. The APHC Chairman remained under house arrest, today.

He has not been allowed to come out of his house by the occupation authorities since Wednesday evening.
